27th June 2024: Frederick Hervey-Bathurst - War, Faith and Poetry: the origins of the Gothic Revival

Gwrych is a masterpiece of the Gothic Revival, but where did this movement come from and what did it mean?

By the time that Gwrych had been built, the style had just begun to be normalised in the catalogue of contemporary taste and a consensus was forming on its connotations and meanings: antiquarianism, nationalism and the picturesque. However, this consensus had not emerged peacefully but rather, been hard-won in a vicious national debate which had raged for over a century on maters of religion, nationalism and politics.

In this talk, Frederick will examine the poetry and and prejudices of these debates which fomented the emergence of the Gothic Revival as one of the foremost styles of the 19th Century.
